Pat Kane
- Artist and Educator
My philosophy in education is to build community.
Each child should feel a part of the whole, with one’s own sense of common purpose, one’s own sense of individual worth. The words I use with children are:
Working Together
Respect
Quietude
I use my own personal and artistic experience to create two separate but similar residencies:
An Old Time Country Shindig,
or An Irish Ceili Night.
These experiences include songs, dances, instruments and stories of old time America or Ireland. They stress the community building qualities of rural social dancing and folk singing.
I like to develop ongoing relationships with schools, in the hopes of creating a stronger sense of belonging for students. By repeating from one year to the next, a sense of community can be built, and progress can be noticed on a school wide level. Every school can use an increase in the qualities of cooperation and respect, and my tools are fun and effective.
“Students and teachers had a wonderful time learning about the Irish from someone who truly is a gifted teacher and performer. His timing and classroom management skills would compare favorably with any veteran teacher, and his content was extensive. I have seen many artists work with students, but in my 26 years of teaching never have I seen anyone better than Pat. He always gives 100%, and accommodates his program to the needs of his audience.” - Marilyn Sullivan, Elmira City School District
